This 40cm painting is called, ‘View Through a Hagstone’ and was inspired by the colours of the water you find in Cornish harbours. I found a pebble with a hole through it and legend says if you look through the hole you see into another world. I sketched the movement of my breath on the beach, listening to the sounds of the water and birds and then back in my garden studio I added to these marks, responding intuitively.
My process involves building up complex layers after layers of oil paint, glazes and cold wax medium then removing parts using various tools such as driftwood and shells to create texture. I love the way I excavate the layers to reveal the hidden colours beneath, which always bring me joy as if I’m remembering a happy memory.
Professionally framed in a white painted hardwood tray frame and includes d-rings and cord.
