‘Safe Harbour’ was inspired by the colours of the water and texture of the ripples in the sand you find in Cornish harbours on the tideline. I sketched the movement of my breath on the beach, listening to the sounds of the water and birds and then back in my garden studio I added to these marks, responding intuitively. I’ve even mixed crushed shells into the paint which you might spot.

My process involves building up complex layers after layers of oil paint, glazes, pigments and cold wax medium then removing parts using various tools such as driftwood and shells to create texture. I love the way I excavate the layers to reveal the hidden colours beneath, which always bring me joy as if I’m remembering a happy memory.

The cradled Birch wood panels I use are hand prepared and finished with a final layer of cold wax medium. They have a lovely lustre and tactile surface quality to them and have details in them that you notice on closer inspection.

Professionally framed in a white painted hardwood tray frame and includes d-rings and cord.
